Aniplus HD surprised the audience with not one, but two episodes of the highly anticipated suspense thriller to Singapore on the 9th of July, one day before it airs in Japan. A short video message by director Shinichiro Watanabe, also shed some light on his motivations behind this original work.
Story
On a hot summer’s day, an abrupt and massive terror attack on Tokyo shook the core of this peaceful country. The perpetrators of the crime are but two teenage boys, Nine and Twelve. Going by the name “Sphinx”, the terrorists embroil the world in their game of terror.

Review
Even from the early trailers released, Terror in Resonance has proven to be nothing short of a gripping thriller. The story tells of two seemingly normal high school boys of contrasting personalities, mysteriously linked to a cache of radioactive plutonium stolen in broad daylight under maximum security.
On a school trip, the boys, under the monikers Nine and Twelve, executed the first in what would be a series of terror attacks. Their perfectly executed demolition of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building goes as planned, except for one unexpected slip-up: classmate Risa Mishima, who happened to run into the wrong person at the wrong place and the wrong time. This unexpected twist of fate leads her into their world, with no turning back.

A balance of thrills and suspense flow at an unabated pace, leaving viewers gasping and yet hungry for more. Both Nine and Twelve commanded attention at every turn with clean execution and sharp wit. Calm and stoic Nine balances the antics of cheerfully childish Twelve in a two-man act that can only be described as chillingly adorable. This being especially apparent in their recording of a terror “forecast” placed on the web, or when they spent a cheery weekend afternoon devising new bombs together.
Voice actors Kaito Ishikawa (Nine) and Souma Saitou (Twelve) impress by capturing the sharp character nuances in their lines. Saitou switches from cheerful teenager to emotionless killer seamlessly between lines, while Ishikawa commands every scene with his firm grasp of Nine’s cold demeanour.
Just when you thought the series was going to be just about these young criminal masterminds, the narrative cleverly swings to also give you scenes from the police department’s point of view. Deftly balancing the adrenaline rush of watching these two unlikely terrorists and the thrill of the chase as the detectives grapple with the sphinx’s riddle, Zankyou no Terror serves up a compelling tale not to be missed.
Production

Without doubt, the production crew of Terror in Resonance is probably its greatest selling point. Director Watanabe Shinichiro, best known for his ground-breaking work on space cowboy hit classic Cowboy Bebop and more recently Sakamichi no Apollon, is responsible for this original work. Composer Yoko Kanno adds this work to the list of anime she has extended her unique musical touch to, which includes Cowboy Bebop, Macross Frontier, Ghost in the Shell and Sakamichi no Apollon.
Director Watanabe is back on familiar ground, working once again with Yoko Kanno, Character Designer Nakazawa Kazuto (Samurai Champloo) and production house MAPPA (Sakamichi no Apollon) to create another possibly legendary masterpiece of our time.
Through the interviews with Watanabe, he reveals that during what seemed like the “lull” period of creation from 2007 to Sakamichi no Apollon in 2012, Terror in Resonance was already in the works, and was planned as a succeeding Watanabe work after Sakamichi no Apollon. He likens Terror in Resonance as the very antithesis of comedic Space Dandy (which he is also working on concurrently as supervising director), as it explores much darker and heavier themes as compared to the gag-filled Space Dandy series.
Despite the stark contrast in tone, he professes that it is his dream to produce both works, which has now been fulfilled. Watanabe also suggests that fans of popular BBC detective series SHERLOCK would probably enjoy Terror in Resonance, as in similarly showcasing the thrilling chase between a middle-aged detective and the terror unleashed upon the city.
Overview
![zankyou_visual01]()
The preview of Terror in Resonance proves that it’s going to be a must-watch, its good writing a refreshing breath of air amongst the many run-of-the-mill productions that currently plague the anime industry. One of the most compelling features of Terror in Resonance is how its story is built from the characters. With the initial focus on the individual, the world is expanded and painted from the characters’ views. The backdrop of the story is stunning, a hyperrealistic reflection of modern-day Tokyo in painstaking detail.
The genius of Yoko Kanno once again shines through as her compositions accentuate the background of the story, setting the tone and pace of the story with unique flair.
Although the themes featured in this series are not completely original (dystopian Tokyo, terror attacks, teenage “soldiers” with tormentous pasts), the execution of this story is remarkable in its own right. With this much going for it in just the first two episodes, Terror in Resonance is definitely one of this season’s leading works.
Catch Terror in Resonance premiering 21 July (Monday) at 11pm on Aniplus HD, available on Singtel mio TV Ch340 and Toggle.sg.
