[ANIME]Why Gundam Build Fighters is the best place to start watching Gundam

$

Ever since its first televised appearance in 1979, Gundam has gone on to become a worldwide phenomenon and one of the most popular anime franchises of all time.  In 2013, Sunrise announced an interesting take on Gundam as part of its 35th Anniversary.

That would be Gundam Build Fighters (GBF), a new series involving kids competing against each other with their own customized Gunpla! Many anime fans of different walks of life will be able to easily enjoy GBF and jump onto the Gundam bandwagon.

So why would GBF be the best place to start watching Gundam from scratch?

Point 1: ALL the Gundams from ALL the Generations!

As GBF is a celebration of all things Gundam, then it must have appearances from all Gundam series right?

Throughout the entire series, you will see various cameo appearances from multitudes and multitudes of mobile suits from the 35 years of history. You may be able to recognise the more obvious ones from the TV series but there will also be appearances from the more obscure Gundam side stories, mangas, photo-novels and even games such as Extreme Gundam, S Gundam and Gundam Aesculapius.

1387790015029

Going through 35 years of history, you must have stumbled upon a couple of mobile suit designs you might really like. And from there you can start by watching/playing the series that has those designs!

There’s really no need to start from the first Gundam series and follow chronologically all the way. Just watch the shows with your favourite mobile suit designs, and continue from there. You can always rewatch the series again if you plan to watch them all chronologically!

Point 1: Feels like your regular anime so it’s easy to get into!

While GBF is a pretty fantastic Gundam/mecha show, it is still an anime first and foremost. It boasts a fair share of really good character designs, especially the female characters.

GBF fans seem to be going crazy for Iori Rinko and Aila Jyrkianen. The mecha designs are no slouch either, having some really impressive suit designs like the Wing Gundam Fenice, Sengoku Astray Gundam and Kampfer Amazing.

1395048701544

You also get a good mix of character interaction intertwined with fast paced mecha action every episode, even in the fillers!

The animation is the standard Sunrise quality so it is pretty good as you would expect it to be. The mecha are all hand drawn as well. The voice cast has a nice balance between rookie seiyuus and some famous veterans such as Nakamura Yuuichi and Kotono Mitsuishi! The show is pretty light-hearted as well so you won’t be disappointed to see your favourite character being killed off.

It’s a pretty fun Gundam show for all ages to enjoy!

1395048103205

Lastly point 1: It’s FREE to watch on YouTube!

Yes, you heard me correctly;

GBF is free to watch on YouTube! Like the previously aired series Mobile Suit Gundam AGE, GBF airs on the Gundam.info YouTube channel every Monday at 7pm (GMT+8).

You get to enjoy the entire show in 720p goodness~ and with English Subtitles only 2 hours after the original airing of the show on Japanese TVs. There’s no need to wait for eventual TV airings, DVDs or Blu Ray releases as you can get your hands on the show via the most popular video sharing site on the internet!

So that is what makes GBF one of the best places to start watching is because it is the most easily accessible amongst the others. And with the series just ending this past week, newcomers can easily watch all the episodes at one go!

1395048000082

You might wonder why I’m only recommending everyone to watch Gundam Build Fighters when it just ended.

Actually, this coming week is Gundam’s 35th Anniversary on April 7th! And what better way to celebrate the long history of Gundam with the show that’s a love letter to the franchise! Majority of the merchandise have already been released as of today as well so you can start grabbing all those stuff that you really want to get.

And there you have it guys. For those who have yet to give GBF a try, I hope that you will give it a go. I’m sure you will get excited and want to start building your own custom Gunpla! This will probably be popular among youngsters as well!

There are plenty of parts where people who aren’t as knowledgeable about Gundam can still enjoy. For the Gundam fans that have yet to watch it –  is truly the Gundam fans’ Gundam anime with tons of homage to practically every series in existence so you’ll definitely want to watch GBF as soon as possible!

GO Watch it!!

This year saw the merging of the Tokyo International Anime Fair and the Anime Contents Expo to form the first ever Anime Japan! The event was organised with the help of  The Association of Japanese Animations and The Association of Manga Publishers.

Anime Japan was held over the course of two days (March 22-23) at Tokyo Big Sight which is home to events such as Comiket and the Tokyo Motor Show.

The event boasted an impressive repertoire of  companies, including Aniplex, Toei Animation, Kadokawa, Production IG, Bandai Visual and Sunrise just to name a few.
Needless to say, the event was incredibly fun and had lots to see!

So, with no further delay, I give you

The 5 Booths You Should Have Seen At Anime Japan 2014

1. Type Moon x Ufotable

Type Moon x Ufotable featured their Fate Series and had impressive artwork displays. They also boasted a Life Size Saber~
Official Artbooks and Artist graffiti books were on sale.

Hopefully fans got their hands on some of the goodies. I am a big fan of the Fate Project. Are you?

2. TV Tokyo

TV Tokyo’s booth featured Pokemon, Naruto, Soul Eater Not! and much more! It comes also with a message board that allows for attendees to wish a happy TV TOKYO a 50th Anniversary.

As well as NANA NA! The mascot for TV Tokyo’s 50th Anniversary, who could have missed that!
I am exited about Soul Eater coming back to the screen!  What about you guys?

3.  Girlfriend/ Boyfriend Beta

Huh? Saw someone familiar?

The new mobile game Girlfriend Beta followed by the Boyfriend Beta on popular demand!

Fun Fact: Boyfriend Beta has received over 150,000 Pre Orders. The female fans are quite dedicated!
Too many waifus? Never.

4. Agriculture Angel Baraki! Agukaru (あぐかる)

Ibaraki Prefecture is known for its delicious vegetables and other agricultural products.

The farmers of Ibaraki grow their veggies with lots of love and care and people say the vegetable reciprocate when they are harvested.

If you haven’t tried food from Ibaraki, fret not!

Now you can feel the love of the farmers of Ibaraki through the Anime “Agukaru” which follows the adventures of Sanae Baraki, farmer’s daughter who can see spirits. Sanae works hard every day to produce the best agricultural goods full of the farmers’ love whilst fighting off evil doers who seek to harm their farms!

5. Aniplex

The Aniplex Booth featured gorgeous artwork from their projects such as Hidamari Sketch, Darker than Black, Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai, Kill la Kill, Ano Hana and much more!
Being at places like these help one appreciate the sheer work put into the Animes that we watch on a daily basis.
I would have loved to own these beautiful works of art but alas, they were not on sale.

I suppose its time to wrap this up!

There were just a few of the many amazing booths that were on display at Anime Japan 2014 and I personally had a ton of fun.
If you happen to be in Japan during the next Anime Japan, do make sure to drop by!

[JMUSIC] YouTubers React To BABYMETAL, It’s Hilarious!

youtubers react

Alright alright, we’re not exactly very fresh from experiences with BABYMETAL, but that does not mean we can have more new experiences right?

So last night, when I hopped onto Fine Brother’s channel for some videos to watch, that YouTubers React video just stood out there and I went “Sweet Mother of Mercy… So now you finally have got the guts to do this huh”.

Naturally I watched it. Immediately.

Here it is:

From the thumbnail, Tyler Oakley’s reaction was basically what I had when I first learned of BABYMETAL.

Here’s the bonus (more about it later):

In case you might be wondering, The Fine Brothers are one of the more successful and a highly watched channel on YouTube. Their “react” series, which started off with “Kids React” (where they let a group of children watch something and ask them question, hence the name), has over the years expanded to “Teens React“, “Elders React” and “YouTubers” React.

While the participants of the React videos may not always say popular (or not) stuff about what they are watching, it gives some perspective into how a wide range of people will react to something, and what their opinions are. And most of the time, they are pretty spot on. Heck, there were even a few witty responses as well.

Over the course of making “React” videos, there have been a number of such videos on Japanese music and pop culture and stuff like that. Here they are:

Even the Almighty PewDiePie was in that one!

Hatsune Miku:

Here’s the Hatsune Miku ones. There were Elders and Kids React videos for her:

Nyan Cat:

PonPonPon:

Well anyways, the Fine Brothers tend to take what’s popular for the past month or so (although if it was extremely viral like What Does The Fox Say, they tend to pick it up very quickly). While I do not actively camp around waiting for them to have a react video about something Japanese, it usually is interesting to watch when something Japanese comes out.

Personally, I’d go for their My Music transmedia project. It is basically VGHS and The Guild, but more immersive for the audience. What do our readers think of the reactions? Do any of you watch stuff that the Fine Brothers put out? Discuss in the comments!

[JCOLLECTOR] Bandai – HGBF Gundam Exia Dark Matter

EDM1

The upgraded version of the Gundam Amazing Exia, the Gundam Exia Dark Matter (Dark Matter) from Gundam Build Fighters finally makes its HG debut!

Controlled by the famous Meijin Kawaguchi in final round of the Gunpla Battle Championship against Iori Sei and Reiji, this mobile suit emanates a malicious aura only seeking absolute victory at all costs, even to its own fighter.

Looks: 9

This Exia variation takes on a sinister look, sporting a Red-Black-Purple color scheme in contrast to its original Gundam parade colors. It also has a much sharper look as compared to the original, many parts of the kit now has a sharp edge to it; the shoulders, chest, legs and knees as well. The head part has a facemask covering the Gundam face, which further accentuates its sinister look. Thankfully, most of the parts of the Dark Matter are replicated in the correct colors so there’s no need to put effort into getting the correct colors.

It also comes equipped with the Dark Matter booster, a winged backpacked that looks similar to the giant Mobile Armor Sid from Gundam AGE.  It has two pairs of winged appendages on each side and one pair can be used as a pair of swords as well! In all, the Gundam Exia Dark Matter definitely feels like an antagonist Gundam and it succeeds in doing just that and more.

Articulation: 8

As this Gundam is based off the Gundam Exia, the original base kit is the same as the previously released HG Gundam Exia from 2007. While it fares much better than the Build Gundam Mark II and the Beargguy III, it won’t be as articulate as the Build Strike or the Wing Fenice.

Suffice to say, it still boasts quite decent articulation in most aspects of the kit. The arms rotate just enough to pass off for a decent kit in this day and the legs are able to rotate all the way.

EDM5

The Dark Matter booster does have solid articulation thankfully. Utilizing ball joints at each point of articulation, it is really easy to manipulate the wings to any particular position you choose although they may pop out at very infrequent of times.

Weapons: 9

EDM2

Naturally the strongest point of the Gundam Exia line, the Dark Matter does not disappoint here. The main armaments consist of a pair of swords attached to its waist; the Brinicle Blade and the Prominence Blade. The Brinicle Blade has the ability of freeze while the Prominence Blade can generate fire and using them in tandem definitely makes the Dark Matter a fearful opponent. They do look like a pair of weapons a wicked Gundam would use.

It also comes equipped with the Dark Matter rifle, the main long range weapon of choice. The construction is similar to the Exia’s GN Sword, sans the actual GN Sword. It works as a GN beam saber as well! Last of all, it comes with the Dark Matter Blades, a pair of solid blades attached to the Dark Matter Booster. This can be used as wings or melee weapons.

While the weapons may look pretty simple, I do like how the kit still retains the Gundam Exia’s melee focus.

EDM4

Fun Factor: 8

The HG Exia in itself was a pretty enjoyable experience when it comes to building; the Dark Matter enhances the experience. While the base kit is pretty much the same, you do get new parts to mix up the building process. Most of the colors are already color accurate on the Dark Matter sans the handles and the spikes on the GN Swords so there won’t be much frustration in the way of getting it color accurate.

The Dark Matter booster is relatively simple to build so there isn’t much difficulty in making the kit. I do like how some of the weapon parts are from the original Exia kit but mixed in with new parts to give it a fresh challenge to the builder.

It is also really fun to play around with the Dark Matter with all the different kind of swords it has available to use.

EDM3

Extras: 7.5

While it does not have much in the way of extra parts, it comes with an alternate face part!

You can choose to display your Dark Matter with its original face, or the Exia Amazing’s face part, in Dark Matter colors. I do like that you can use the Dark Matter booster as an alternate point to connect to your display base to the Dark Matter so that the joints won’t get in the way of the legs. There are also new hand parts you can use with the Brinicle and Prominence blades too.

EDM6

Overall: 8.5/10

While the original kit may not have the best articulation as compared to the more recent Gunpla kits, every other component more than makes up for that which makes this a fun, quality build in the end.

The Gundam Exia Dark Matter is a must get for all Gundam Build Fighters fans as the token final boss mobile suit of the series, and it also ranks in as one of the most evil looking Gundams in the entire franchise as well! Also, this being a 00 series suit, fans of Gundam 00 would also want to get their hands on it and add it to their collection.

[JTECH] SUPER GT300 – GOODSMILE HATSUNEMIKU Z4 takes the first round of the year!

13715529285_cd4160da94_b

Over the weekends, the debuting race of the SUPER GT 2014 series was held at the Okayama International Circuit in Japan. It would be the first round of 8 races determined of the 2014 series, which include 1 overseas races in Thailand’s Buriram United International Circuit instead of the the traditional Sepang in Malaysia.

GT300

13715422074_83325655d5_b

And the winner for the GT 300 category is none other than car No. 4, GOODSMILE HATSUNEMIKU Z4 with a timing of 1 hour 58 minutes and 28.101 seconds, a tight finish just mere 0.3s faster than Studie’s BMW Z4 (No. 7).  A fierce but friendly rivalry seemed to have occurred when the wining drivers were interviewed on their performances and thoughts on the race,

Nobuteru Taniguchi: “Last year it was hard for us to get past Q1 in the qualifying, but this 2014 model is faster in the turns. Also, Yokohama prepared some good tires for us. The advances made with the tires have contributed greatly to improving our times. Our performance had been good since the maker test event at Fuji and, entering race week, the No. 7 car (Studie BMW Z4) was also performing well, so this made me feel that more than winning the race, I didn’t want to be beaten by car No. 7. That is why I am especially relieved to have won this race.”

Tatsuya Kataoka: “I’m glad we won. We started the race from 2nd position and I was able to get the lead going into the first turn. After that I wanted to build up a lead over the rest of the field, but I wasn’t able to get as fast a pace as I had hoped and they caught up with me. Especially when it began to rain a bit, car No. 7 (Studie BMW Z4) caught up with me, and so did the GAINER (No. 11 GAINER DIXCEL SLS) and the Prius (No. 31 OGT Panasonic PRIUS). In the end, the rain stopped after about two laps and I managed to hold on to the lead, but if the rain had continued for another two laps, the story might have been different. That is why I am relieved now with the way things turned out.”

Looks like it will be a good year for Hatsune Miku with it’s first win in the Super GT and it’s upcoming MIKUEXPO around the world with the first in Indonesia!

GT500

In the GT 500 Category, the wining team is number 37, KeePer TOM’S RC F driving the LEXUS RC F / RI4AG, a car introduced to the world of Super GT just this year replacing the team’s long time work horse, the LEXUS SC430. This win makes it the first win for the car model and driver Andrea Caldarelli as well as the 11th win for driver Daisuke Ito.

The RC F, what a looker~

For your information, the second is ENEOS SUSTINA RC F (No. 6) driving also the LEXUS RC F / RI4AG, lagging behind by 5.026 seconds.

The second round of the Super GT 2014 series will be happening in the highly demanding and famous FUJI speedway next month on the third and fourth of May.

You can find more about this season on Super GT website, http://supergt.net/

I’m really glad the White Doll is finally getting a proper HG kit so that’s in my radar as well. Also, Gundam Exia is getting released as a RG and I really like the development that goes into these RG kits so I’m definitely itching to get that too.

Kana Hanazawa proves her unrivaled popularity by topping the female charts, almost tripling anisong queen Nana Mizuki‘s votes at second place. With a good mix of newer faces and strong veterans, this list also showcases the popularity of recent anime.

Charapedia is an online wiki page maintained by anime and game fans. It acts as an online collection of everything and anything related to anime/game characters, including character bios, information, fan illustrations and videos. As registration is completely free, it serves as an accessible online platform to create and share information and creative work, or simply spread the love for your favourite characters. Do note though, it is also only available in Japanese.

The 10,000 fan polls were started at the beginning of this year, and still going strong. Earlier polls include “Which character would you want as your lover?” and even “Which female character would you want as your imouto (little sister)?”.

The best part? Charapedia also indicates both the combined and separate results of male/female voters, or younger/older voters, so your voices will not be drowned out by others!

Would you like your voices to be heard on AFACHAN as well? Feel free to drop us a comment or two!

Edited: Fixed number of votes Nao Touyama has gotten to reflect the actual number from the poll.

[SEIYUU] Nobunaga the Fool Character Songs: Nobunaga & Hideyoshi

With the impending end of the anime series, stave off withdrawal with upcoming character song releases from the seiyuu cast! First up are the character songs for titular character Nobunaga Oda (CV: Mamoru Miyano) and his acrobatic companion Toyotomi Hideyoshi (CV: Yuuki Kaji).

A total of 6 volumes have been announced, with Nobunaga (Mamoru Miyano) and Hideyoshi (Yuuki Kaji) taking up the first 2 volumes. Other characters (and their seiyuus) slated for releases over May and June include Jeanne (Youko Hikasa), Ichihime (Minori Chihara), Himiko (Nao Toyama), and Gaius (Yuuichi Nakamura). Regretfully, it appears that Takahiro Sakurai, who voices Mitsuhide, will be sitting out on this set of character songs too.

Each of the volumes, or character song singles, will include 2 titles each with their instrumental only versions. The first 2 volumes, will be released on 16 April 2014, just before the broadcast of the closing episode on the 17 April. With veteran character song lyricist Yohei Matsui taking the helm for all 4 songs, we can look forward to an interesting set of titles!

Previews for the song are now available on youtube, through their official website

Tracklist:
1.DECIDE MY FATE
2.NOT LONELY BUT FOOL
3.DECIDE MY FATE (Instrumental)
4.NOT LONELY BUT FOOL (Instrumental)

Tracklist:
1.SPEARHEAD!
2.SIDE BY SIDE
3.SPEARHEAD! (Instrumental)
4.SIDE BY SIDE (Instrumental)

Both singles are priced at 1200yen (before taxes) and will be available on amazon.jp and Animate stores.

I went to the previews without much expectations, but left impressed at how good the songs were! Both volumes were clearly written with the seiyuus’ vocal characteristics in mind.

Nobunaga’s songs had slightly better arrangement, with the second track infused with strains from the shamisen and the bamboo flute. And as usual Mamo delivers both rock-tinged songs with fantastic flair… Hideyoshi’s songs were upbeat, with SPEARHEAD being slightly more uptempo, with Kaji once again in his element as the mischievous kid brother you can’t help but adore.

Definitely looking forward to the full releases!

We’ll be updating you as the previews of the other character songs become available!

[A-A-ANIME!!?] Anime Parody “Senpai Club”

tumblr_n11lpvJ7yg1sivc1mo1_500

Well, I do not know whether to laugh at this or be amused but Swedish duo Olivia Bergstrom and Eric Bradford’s creations caught my attention.

From what I can see, most tropes that you will associate in anime are fleshed out in the show – which has spawned two parts so far. I probably cringed through the entire four minutes of each clip, but can’t help but agree that some of those tropes are really just… overused… (I lost it when they showed the flowery glittery aura background whenever a (apparently) pretty girl starts talking in a really enchanted way).

But don’t get me wrong! Tropes may become overused as time goes by, but that still doesn’t change the fundamental fact that when writing a story, such tropes have to be applied appropriately and with impact, although… if you want them to have any impact in this day and age, you are going to have to be a little more creative, which is fun isn’t it!?

Also, this series seems to have inspired a whole load of fanart too! Click here to have a look!

Here, you can watch them here!

Here is their tumblr and YouTube channel that I managed to find, also, there is also a blog that follows the status of the anime: Tumblr | YouTube | Blog

Seriously though… Tsumiki looks a little like…

Akarin~! And turn invisible.

Speaking of which, this seems to remind me a little of how people all over the place are trying to animate animes, and they are not necessarily from Japan. Alter Ego Productions is another example, with TORKAIZER. While it is somewhat better in production quality and such, it really makes me wonder just how much influence anime has on the world. It’s getting to the point where independent indies are animating their own creations. Knowing this makes me really happy somehow.

But hey, I still enjoy an occasional Adventure Time or My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Anyway, you can watch a trailer of TORKAIZER here:

What do you readers think of the increased spread and influence of anime to independent works? Let us know in the comments!

[RANDOM]How much does an Evangelion pilot earn?

EVA01

While studying for you college exam or filling out that Income Tax form, have you even wondered beyond all the nervous breakdowns, battles against giant Angels and day to day tensions amongst pretty ladies,

how much does Evangelion pilot Shinji Ikari actually earns in a year?

Heiken Ninshu(Average Annual Salary), a Japanese wage research organization, conducted  a study recently to help determine the answer.

Shinji is part of a very selected group of 14 year old individuals piloting the giant Evangelions (Eva), in which only seven known machines are made, based off the original Anime and its relevant side material sources.  As a pilot, his main job is to protect the Earth and the humans residing from the wrath of the Angels.

When he’s not doing that, he has to go through various tests to ensure that the Eva is still functional and working properly like the synchronization tests. While he may be a pilot, he is still a child so he has to attend school on a day-to-day basis like most other 14 year olds when he’s not out saving the world from utter destruction.

Shinji_Ikari

Being a mecha pilot, he would probably be paid the same way as a Japanese Air Self Defense Force pilot, which amounts to about 150,000 yen every month, with a base salary of 1.8 million yen the entire year. Seems a little low don’t you think?

Thankfully since he is a pilot, he would be naturally piloting it on a regular basis. A flight pay is awarded to him, about 153,200 yen per month, or 1,838,400 yen per year. He would also get quite a number of perks he get simply for being a pilot of a giant robot.

For deployment to disaster or hazardous area for those dangerous battlefields he gets to go through, Shinji will also be drawing a supplement. Then assuming that the Angels attack only on weekdays, he would earn about 1,620 yen a day or 388,800 yen a year.

In addition, Heiken Ninshu says he would be eligible for maritime peacekeeping work which amounts to 400,000 yen! If you include the price index, which makes piloting an Eva extremely costly, the value would increase tenfold summing it up to about 44,100,000 yen! And to top it off, adding in overtime pay of 200,000 yen and risk pay, which he will definitely incur due to the risky nature of piloting Eva (burns, injuries, possible Tangification) of 1 million yen.

In total, Shinji Ikari would have earned up to 56,100,000 yen or about SGD$690,000 per Annual!!!

The original report also mention Misato Katsuragi’s payslip as well!

While she may not be an Evangelion pilot, she’s still a Major in the top secret NERV organization in charge of eliminating the Angels. During her free time, she enjoys a good can of beer or two or driving around in her favorite Renault Alpine A310.

MISATO

Being a Major, assuming that she is paid like a Major in the JSDF it would be around 319,000 yen a month or 3,820,000 yen a year. She would be entitled to Summer and Winter bonuses, that would total to about 1,400,000 yen.

Including her allowance by NERV, that would sum up to about 9,000,000 yen or SGD$110,646. It’s not as high as Shinji’s theoretical pay though. We are not sure how much more allowance she would get, looking after 2 of the most important pilots.

Also, Misato can be heard complaining that she still has 33 more payments to pay off for her Alpine A310. While we may not know how much she has paid off already, at that point of time an A310 would cost around 1,800,000 to 2,200,000 yen or SGD$27,290. You might wonder how much she pays a month just to clear that loan, looking after Pen Pen and not to mention the amount of beer she purchases each month!

So that’s how much an Evangelion pilot like Shinji Ikari and NERV Major Misato Katsuragi earns each year. It may not be impressive seven figure sums but seeing that Shinji is doing a deed for an entire planet, he really should be paid much, much more.

Would you want to pilot a Eva or any other giant robot if you’re going to be paid that much? Well, I’m a sucker for giant robots so if I ever had that opportunity I’d definitely want to go, the pay seems pretty alright to me!

The amount stated here is not verified with the NERV Worker’s union, so they might be pay 1000 yen(SGD12) an hour for all we know XD
