The recent Persona Super Live concert at the Nippon Budokan had a surprise in store for everyone! At the end of the whole concert, the audience was treated to a brand new trailer for Persona 5. Moments later, the video went up live in glorious 1080p on Atlus’ Youtube channel. Without farther ado, here is the video!
~~~~~~~~~~~
Here’re some information based on the trailer alone!
- It’s quite obvious already, but Persona 5 will be following a phantom thief motif, and the 4 characters shown are dressed as such.
2. The 4 characters are as follows: the MC, a male (looking suspiciously like Naruto), a female (also looking suspiciously like Junko), and a chibi black cat.
3. The characters’ names are seen in the above screenshot and these are the rough (not official!) translations:
– the MC is plainly called 主人公 (Shujinkou), Protagonist in English
– the male is called 坂本 竜司, Ryuuji Sakamoto
– the cat is called モルガナ, Morgana
– the girl is called 高巻 杏, An(zu) Koumaki > here’s the tricky part, the character “杏” can be read as either An or Anzu
4. The MC is shown to dash with superhuman speed, almost teleportation. Presumably an effect of either the “world” they’re in or the clothes they’re wearing?
5. The menus have received a complete overhaul. Instead of the static menus you were used to in previous Persona games, the new one is dynamic. What happens is that when you enter a menu, the character in the background will strike a pose. As you navigate through the different parts of the menu, the character will strike different poses.
6. The new assistants for Igor! They definitely look like twins, but for all we know, they might not be related at all. The assistant on the left has her hair tied in a single braid while the one on the left has her hair in two buns. The third screenshot shows them with eye patches – will that be vital to the story? Only by playing the game shall we know.
7. Probably one of the two most distinctive changes as of now – you don’t fight Shadows now, but instead the Personas themselves. This is originally from the Shin Megami Tensei (SMT) series, where you either fought Demons (they were called Demons in SMT, and subsequently changed to Persona in the Persona series to make it more kid friendly) or try to win them over to your side.
MC’s pistol, male’s shotgun, and cat’s slingshot. The female is all the way at the back, being blocked by the enemy Personas as well as all the effects, making it impossible to see her ranged weapon.
- The second most distinctive change in the game – each character has 2 weapons now, a melee weapon and a ranged weapon. This also stems from the SMT series, where your character had both a physical weapon and a ranged weapon. The difference however, is that in SMT, your character can use a variety. While in Persona 5, each character is locked into whatever they have. Let’s take a look at what each character uses:
- the MC uses a sword and a pistol, mainly light weapons
- the male uses a pipe and a shotgun, mainly heavy weapons
- the cat uses a cutlass and a slingshot
- the female uses a whip, ranged weapon unknown
10. Probably the largest hype right now is this. The MC is shown with blood on his eyes, which disappear as blue flames surround him. The blue flames then take the shape of a masquerade mask over his eyes before engulfing his whole body. Until Atlus decides to tell us more, the current favourite explanation for this is that the characters themselves transform into the Persona they embody, breaking the tradition of summoning the Persona like in previous Persona games.
I cannot contain my excitement for this game, mainly because they’re following the SMT battle system. I’m a huge SMT fan and I prefer it more than the Persona series, and I’m really glad that they somewhat merged the two series together in a very subtle manner.
That’s all the information I have for now, do look forward to my next post when more information is released!
