Tsukiuta is a collaboration between seiyuu and Vocaloid producers. Tsukiuta, or Monthly Song, as it is aptly named, encompasses the running “monthly” theme of the series. CDs released monthly between December 2012 to May 2013 feature different seiyuus and Vocaloid producers.
On each CD, the seiyuus perform an original song featuring salient seasonal changes or festivities each month, in addition to a second song inspired by or re-arranged from an existing folk song, as well as a mini-drama as original characters of the series.
Besides being an exciting series for both seiyuu and VocaloP fans alike, it is also rich in Japanese culture. Japanese festivities or seasonal changes are conceptualised in both the songs and characters themselves. You may have noticed that characters have pretty “uncommon” names: the boys’ family names reflect the traditional Japanese names of the 12 months, and their names the seasons, climate or festivals of the respective month.
In Japan, the third month of the year, March, marks the turning point of the seasons and the birth of spring. March boy, Yayoi Haru (弥生 春), is named Yayoi after the traditional Japanese name for the month of March, while Haru translates to “Spring”. March girl is named Momozaki Hina (桃崎ひな), a likely reference both to the peaches (momo) in season and Hina-matsuri or Doll’s Day, celebrated by girls in March every year. Both original songs composed by YuuyuP fully embraces the coming of spring in March, in addition to a re-arranged version of “Haru no Ogawa” (Springtime Brook), a well-known folk song taught to all school-going Japanese children.

Starting from December 2012, 12 CDs have been released monthly for male characters (Dec-Nov), and 6 CDs for females (Dec-May). Following the success of the male series, 3 audio drama CDs were subsequently released. New fans, fret not, for the series is far from over. Recent releases include a new duet series, featuring alternate-month boys.
